At Northstowe Secondary College, our Parks house is identified using the colour teal.

About Us

Named after Rosa Parks, an American activist in the civil rights movement, whose refusal to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus in 1955 led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Her bravery led to nationwide efforts to end racial segregation on public transportation and elsewhere. She is often described as “the first lady of civil rights” and “the mother of the freedom movement”. Parks was awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. Award by the NAACP in 1980, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1996, and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1999. She continued to support the NAACP and many civil rights events, and in 1987 she co-founded the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development to provide career training for young people in Detroit.

She was chosen because she embodies our school values of kindness, curiosity and hard work, and she also has some important messages for young people.

  • You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right
  • That we are here on planet Earth to live, grow up, and do what we can to make this world a better place for all people to enjoy freedom
  • To bring about change, you must not be afraid to take the first step. We will fail when we fail to try
